What is ‘pop music?’ Where did this distinction arise and what’s it is purpose? If it has a purpose, who does it serve?

On close examination, you see that it is the way society absorbs a thing; the way the tiger is defanged. It is another useful illusion from society’s toolbox of illusions. All through my school years, I had to put up with this prattle about ‘ serious music,’ and ‘pop music.’ Oh sure, I bought into it a bit, at first. But one only has to question the status quot.

first of all, we all know what it means, this business of ‘pop music’ and ‘ serious music.’ It depends a lot on what side of the fence you’re sitting on, of course. If you’re a ‘ serious performer,’ ‘ serious music’ is ‘ good,’ and ‘pop’ music is ‘bad.’ Of course we all know that ‘ serious music’ will make you no resources. Why? Because it’s ‘ good,’ of course, and the majority of people don’t know about ‘ good.’ They only pay for music that’s ‘bad.’

Now to be fair, if you’re on the other side of this specific fence, ‘ serious music’ is ‘boring,’ ( that’s bad) and pop music is ‘cool.’ ( That’s ‘ nice ‘). Further, this historically speaking, has tended to be ‘radical’ and ‘revolutionary.’

‘Serious music?’ Part of the establishment.

It’s necessary to reflect on the political demographics implied by these distinctions in music. They are fairly undeniable, when you stop to think about it, but it’s exhilarating that the majority individuals toss these distinctions about without a second thought. From these two easy musical types, you may effortlessly build up profiles of the listener’s politics, religion, average income and so on and so on. individuals do plot these demographics. Not the listeners, but the individuals who are in the business of sales and marketing.

Still, as you might suspect, all these demographics are bound and held in place by belief systems that are spun on half truths, exaggeration and out right fantasy.

Even ‘ meaningful ‘ musicians have allowed themselves to be saddled with ridiculous myths and caricature profiles of past composers, much to their personal detriment and decline of the tradition. Most of these folks, who ought to know better, have been content with whatever historical spin has been handed down.

This kind of thinking has drained the necessary ity out of the tradition. Take just the idea that composers like Beethoven and Mozart weren’t actually popular until following their death. Th isn’t ion has bred a mentality that has said whatever it establishes is too wonderful for present day audiencess and it must unending ly establish for some, undefined, superior future audiences. This additionally conveniently isolates it from any criticism of what’s going on.

In point of fact, Beethoven was acknowledged as the biggest living composer in his own lifetime. The city of Vienna, an historically vital center of culture in Europe, paid the man to live there. As far as being ‘radical’ or ‘revolutionary,’ well, let’s see; all of us have Beethoven dedicating his third symphony to the leader of the French Revolution. all of us have Hector Berlioz composing an enduring masterpiece while stoned on opium.

We have premiers of famous classical works prefer Bolero and the Rite of Spring that were either banned or caused a riot. This list goes on and on.

And what of this hoary chestnut that demonstrates pop music is a lesser discipline? Anyone with a musical ear can tell you that there’s been plenty of wonderful ‘pop music.’ And why not? a lot of of these artists, like Elton John, went to music school. They’re ‘ serious artists.’ So why this wonderful deceit? The the majority clear suspect is the music business, but it is clear by now, that they have no idea what they’re doing either.

No, the deeper reality is that, as long as there has been a culture in the western hemisphere, there has been a counter culture. All this business of counter culture, that supposedly began in the sixties, didn’t.

How far back does it go? Well. Richard Wagner, in his early days, has been part of a free love movement in Ger many and his first opera has been called ‘Forbidden Love,’ and it has little to do with rings of power or Teutonic nymphs.

It’s an opera that Wagner, later in his life, professed that he’d like to forget about, and, well, we are just not going to let him. I will deal with culture and its twin, counter culture in subsequent articles.

Setting It to Music

I know some people prefer to write while their favorite music is playing, and others like silence. I’m a silence person myself but there are special cases.

By way of example, If the children are home and making a racket, music through headphones is a great way to isolate myself for an hour or two. I don’t mean I wander round the house 24/7 in a musical daze, but if I need a couple of quiet hours of writing time to finish off my word count this is the way to get it.

Second, if I’m writing an vital scene I find the right music can really help to  set my own mood, and for that reason the mood of the piece I’m writing.

And that is really the reason for this blog post.

You see, although you can listen to music while writing, how carefully do you pick the pieces? I use my own Play software which allows 100 named playlists, but anything else with similar features ought to do. And here’s what you need -  a playlist for each mood and style of writing. Have a Romance playlist with gentle love songs, an Action playlist with heavy drumming and wild electric guitars, perhaps a Classical playlist for a bit of culture – something to listen to while you’re writing about a visit to a posh hotel or restaurant, forexample.

What you don’t want to do is have one playlist with all your faves mixed up. It’s  profoundly hard to write a touching romantic scene when heavy metal is hammering your ears one minute and Cliff Richard is going on about his walking talking doll the next.

Live Music!

Live music. That common saying can contain some truth, but these days the word “live” is having less and less to do with music. For a lot of people, a deejay is their form of live music. Despite what deejay’s would like to have you believe, artists make excellent entertainment.

In the first place, individuals find pleasure in human performance.  Many artists prefer wonderful athletes are multi- talent ed. They will croon on the tenor saxophone right to your soul, then turn around and chunk out a funky rhythm on a Fender Stratocaster. can a deejay play a turntable behind his head or with his teeth? Professional artists love to sing and groove on just about any style of music from a Frank Sinatra to Outkast. They just find pleasure in playing when the listeners is responding to their performance.

In the second place, artists are students of the arts. Musicians do not merely “push buttons.” They’ve had years of practice in their homes, and they do their thing on stage. Un prefer deejay’s artists do not try to sing over or add other loud or strange noises to program music. Once a song starts it flows to the end and in the unfortunate event of a power shortage artists might continue to entertain acoustically until power is restored. Even non-professional artists a number of times understand “the show must go on” concept.

Lastly, one of the most attractive features of bands as entertainment is the affinity amidst them and their audiences. Watching a amazing drummer is never boring because they’re unending ly moving…feeling. an animated solo violinist playing an old wooden Stradivarius violin has a much greater opening  of reaching into your soul and stirring your feelings than a DJ with an array of magnetic speakers and digital amplifiers no matter how amazing his system sounds. It is an apple trying to be an orange. It is the difference amidst human blood and electricity.

Contrary to popular opinion, artists may be affordable. Just prefer with a DJ, finding a performer well in advance and securing them with a low down payment, the price may be negotiated to avoid costly or inadequate entertainment. Bands will even throw in a free cocktail hour or an extra half hour at the end to gain a date! a lot of artists are now offer ing ” DJ time.” This is when the performer hat comes off and the DJ hat is put on to performance the Techno, House, Hip-Hop, etc…Genres of now. people who have small events should appreciate these characteristics of bands. However, a lot of people who have large events opt to have artists because they love the performer individual ity. In a lot of ways, performers are the ideal entertainers.

But over time, pop has gone from “popular in general” to “a genre ” described as sounding musically similar to rap, but with singing. This is due to radio stations labeling themselves as “pop stations” taking heavy prefer ence over certain sounds, tossing other popular bands who don’t fit into the sound or other categories like rock into the “alternative” label.

The basic package features a series of twenty lessons that start truly simply and progress through both the treble and bass clefs. The graphics are ample and bright and simple to read. The Future of Internet Music

To get an idea of where Web music is headed it’s important to understand the history. Let’s think back to the time when music downloads first became popular. For me it has been spurred in the early Napster days. Everyone has been out there going crazy grabbing any and all music they might find in the absence of consequence. Then the RIAA came along and said “wait guys that is our copyrighted content you are downloading.” Since that time the RIAA has been fighting an uphill battle to end copyright infringement.

After the early days of Napster and peer to peer file sharing a new crop of web sites popped up provide ing legal music downloads. Even Napster went legit signing deals with major labels to provide unlimited access to their provide ings. In order to make this a reality the record industry had to come up with a way to protect their investment.

Along came digital rights management ( Digital Rights Management (DRM) ). New Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies have been used to limit access to media. In essence as long as you are subscribed to Rhapsody for example you may download and listen to as many tunes as you like. You may even play them on your mp3 player (excluding iPod and Zune). The Digital Rights Management (DRM) kicks in by restricting the number of devices you’ve access from and cutting access completely when you end the subscription.

In addition,  companies chose to run their personal brand of Digital Rights Management. This means that if you own an iPod or Zune player your options are substantially restricted. Apple and Microsoft do their optimum to force you into using iTunes and Zune Marketplace.

Over the last couple years things have differ d quite a bit. Web stores including Amazon and Wal-Mart signed deals with the major labels to sell Digital Rights Management free song downloads. They key here is that you’re paying a fee for each MP3 song you download but get the music in the absence of Digital Rights Management restrictions. Even iTunes has started offer ing Digital Rights Management free downloads.

An additional challenge that faces Web media organizations is the ISP’s battle to reduce network traffic and thus reduce congestion during peak times. The lack of network infrastructure, particularly in the US, is a big concern. Throttling traffic or charging customers for metered access as Comcast and Time Warner are currently testing might drive away customers. we no longer live in a world of text email and static Web pages. websites now provide rich content including streaming audio and video, social integration and an interactive performance ting for people to gather just as you would at your Regional watering hole. Hopefully customers will voice their concerns and ISP’s will in turn expand their network infrastructures to allow for our ever rising bandwidth needs.

So where does this leave us? I recall mentioning excitement about the future of On-line downloads prior to my rants. On-line music websites are looking ahead to the future. With the ability to download songs to computer, cell phone  or other web-enabled devices you’ll have access to the latest songs from anywhere at anytime. websites prefer eMusic, Amazon MP3 and Wal-Mart Music have shown that the Digital Rights Management (DRM) free music is the way of the future. The next step will be to figure a way for websites prefer Rhapsody and Napster to offer unlimited access to Digital Rights Management (DRM) free music for a monthly subscription fee. I willbe the 1st to admit that this is no easy task but one that might prove exceedingly profitable to the music business in this ever rising digital age.

The excitement extends beyond music as organizations like Netflix offer a large selection of movie downloads free to subscribers. We’re not talking about just watching on your PC either. With a  set top box you can download films to watch directly on your television. Industry experts predict that within several years you will not run to your Local video store to rent the latest DVD movies. Instead you’ll simply watch them anytime on demand via download. Alright so I can hear some of you saying yeah but how long do the movies take to download? I can tell you that with Netflix I can start watching about 30 seconds after the download begins. The rest of the movie downloads while I am enjoying the film.

In conclusion the future of Online media is shining bright. Customer’s spend ing habits could advocate record labels and ISP’s accept that the future of music and movies is Online rather than in record and video stores. The instant gratification of having access to millions of tunes or thinking of a movie and watching it a minute later is enough to make me want to stop typing. So sit back, relax and enjoy what the future has in store.
